NOTE: Balloon help is available for the items in the Assign/Change Password dialog. To
  turn on balloon help, choose the Show Balloons item from the Help menu.
The Assign/Change Password dialog allows you to assign a new password or change your current password. The password may be used to protect your settings so that they may not be changed by unauthorized users. Whether or not your settings will be password- protected at launch may be set in the Assign/Change Password dialog (as well as in the General Settings dialog, see Chapter 7, “General Control Settings”). The Assign/Change Password dialog may be opened by selecting the “Assign Password…” or “Change Password…” item (the wording depends on whether you have assigned a password) from the Settings menu, or by typing ⌘-R.
 
Valid passwords are at least one character in length (but should be longer — a one-character password would be fairly easy to guess!) and 12 characters or less in length. Any characters that can be typed from the keyboard may be used in the password.
You should pick something you can easily remember as your password, but something which someone else would not be likely to guess.
NOTE: If your settings are password protected and you forget your password, the only
  option is to throw away the “Acme Movers Preferences” file (in the
“Preferences” folder of your System folder) and let Acme Movers create a new
file.
Current Password: This text entry area will only be active if you have previously defined a password and your session is currently “locked” (password protected). If the dialog opens with the cursor flashing in this area, you must enter your current password or cancel before Acme Movers will allow you to move on.
As soon as you enter the correct number of characters in the “Current Password” text entry area, Acme Movers will automatically compare what you have typed against your saved password. If what you typed matches your saved password, the “Current Password” text entry area will be disabled and the cursor will automatically move to the “New Password” text entry area (see below).
If what you typed does not match your saved password, a dialog box will appear informing you of this. This dialog gives you two choices: “Try Again” or “Cancel.”
 
Clicking the “Cancel” button dismisses the dialog but does nothing else. Clicking the “Try Again” button (or pressing Enter or Return) dismisses the dialog and clears the “Current Password” text entry area so you may try entering your password again.
New Password: If you have not previously defined a password or if your settings are currently “unlocked” (not password protected), the dialog will open with the cursor in this text entry area. In this case, all you have to do is to type whatever you want to use as a password (or as a new password) in this area. Then hit the “Tab” key and retype the password in the “Confirm New Password” text entry area (see below).
Confirm New Password: Whatever is entered in this text entry area must match exactly, character for character, what is entered in the “New Password” entry area (see above). This is for your protection: since Acme Movers displays “apples” instead of the characters you type (so someone looking over your shoulder cannot learn your password), it requires you to type the same thing in both text entry areas in an attempt to make certain there are no typing errors in your password.
Locked at Launch: If this checkbox is marked, a password will be required once after each time Acme Movers is launched before any password-protected settings may be changed. If the checkbox is later unmarked, after defining a password, Acme Movers “remembers” your password, but does not require it to be entered before settings may be modified. This checkbox is identical in function to the checkbox by the same name in the General Settings dialog (see Chapter 7, “General Control Settings”).
Cancel: This button dismisses the dialog without saving any new password you may have entered. However, if you have toggled the “Locked at Launch” checkbox (see above), the current setting of the checkbox will still be “remembered” (the Locked at Launch checkbox takes immediate effect).
OK: This button dismisses the dialog. If you have changed your password, this button saves your new password.
